Brought to you by Fear the Walking Dead
At Eat Out HQ, good food is always on our minds. If we’re not going through the long list of reasons we love sourdough or waxing poetic about slap tjips, we’re tossing about answers to foodie hypotheticals (if you could only eat at one restaurant for the rest of your life, which would it be? Would you rather never eat pizza or pasta again? Is there one ultimate braai salad?). With Fear of the Walking Dead starting on DStv (channel 108) on 3 June, the editorial team got to thinking what we’d eat before a zombie apocalypse. Here’s what the team had to say:
I still think about the cheese platter I had at The Brewery and Two Goats Deli in the tiny, dusty Karoo town of Nieu-Bethesda in the Eastern Cape. Now, I’m no cheese platter connoisseur, but this one ranks high up there with the best cheese platters I’ve ever tasted. The unpretentious platter comprises freshly baked bread, butter, a variety of homemade cheeses, smoked kudu salami, honey, sweet chilli sauce, olives, pickles and preserves. – Vinolia Mohube, Writer: Eat Out and Food24
My favourite pizza spot in the ‘burbs! Get the Inferno pizza topped with pepperoni, onion and chilli, and add avo. – Romy Wilson, Videographer: Eat Out and Food24
The ASADO short ribs have mad flavour. It’s a very cool space, too. – Romy Wilson, Videographer: Eat Out and Food24
The ceviche and the fish tacos make me happy, as do the margaritas. – Romy Wilson, Videographer: Eat Out and Food24
If we were to face a zombie apocalypse, my go-to dish would be the lamb ragu (ragu di agnello) from Gemelli in Johannesburg. Braised lamb shoulder, chevin and smoked aubergine served with fresh pasta is a dish you have to try before the zombies take over. For one, Italian food is comforting and Gemelli is great for sharing meals with family and friends. Secondly, this dish is so hearty and flavoursome that you’ll be transported to a foodie utopia, and who wouldn’t want to die that happy? – Robyn Brittow, Eat Out and Food24 intern
This is probably one of Durban’s most precious gems. Whether you’re here for perfect poached eggs, a loaf of warm potato-and-rosemary bread, or sitting on the sidewalk tucking into one of the best pizzas around while listening to live jazz and drinking wine out of tumblers, The Glenwood Bakery is where you’ll want to be for your last meal. Master baker Adam Robinson and his team never fail to impress. It’s so simple yet so, so special. – Nikita Buxton, Associate Editor: Eat Out and Food24
I recommend La Tête because you can eat brains (on toast) and afval (tripe), so you’ll be ahead of the curve with the zombies. Another interesting dish is the devilled chicken hearts and potato. – Adelle Horler, Editor-in-chief: Eat Out and Food24
I’ve never been and have only heard amazing things about both the food and the cocktails! Also – Durbs, bru. – Tessa Purdon, Editor: Eat Out and Food24

I don’t even like pies. Well, at least I thought I didn’t, before I tried the homemade pepper steak pie at this Eastern Cape institution situated on the N2 between PE and Grahamstown. (Don’t sleep on the roosterkoek either, though!) And no, you weren’t there if you didn’t take a picture in front of the entrance, with the Nanaga Farm Stall signage in the background. – Vinolia Mohube, Writer: Eat Out and Food24
If the apocalypse is imminent, I have to have one last meal at SA’s number one restaurant. That view alone is worth it, never mind the exquisite meal ended off with Gregory Czarnecki’s infamous bon bons. In fact, with its high perch and remote destination, I might just hunker down to stay! – Lindsay September, Copy Editor: Eat Out and Food24
