Paul’s Homemade Ice-Cream (Florida Road, Gateway and Suncoast Casino)

Established by Paul Ballen in Joburg in 2014, this locally produced ice cream quickly became the talk of the town and you can now find Paul’s Homemade Ice-cream shops all across the country. They serve up decadent and unique flavours like old-school carrot cake, banana Nutella and malva pudding, as well as a range of vegan ice creams too.  You can also order ice-cream cakes for those special occasions.

Colaba (Morningside)

This boutique ice-cream shop is known for using pure, natural ingredients to create their ice cream, with no artificial colouring or flavouring. This is ice cream in its purest form and is definitely a must-try!  Their unique flavours include baklava, blueberry cheesecake and caramel honeycomb.

The Glenwood Bakery (Glenwood)

The pasta-focused restaurant and popular corner bakery by Adam Robinson both serve up creamy ice cream made in-house. Enjoy the scoop of the day at the restaurant or grab one to go from the bakery, which offers flavours like creamy vanilla, chocolate malt, saffron or banana sorbet. No stabilisers or preservatives are used. The ice cream is available to take home (alongside your freshly baked croissants) in small containers.

Momenti Gelato (Umhlanga Arch)

This little gelateria that was once situated in Morningside has now set up shop in the trendy Umhlanga Arch. The team swirl up premium small-batch gelatos and vegan sorbet, and have a dedicated following of ice-cream enthusiasts. Flavours include gianduja (chocolate and hazelnut), pistachio, fresh black cherry sorbet, golden turmeric, mascarpone blueberry cheesecake, and black sesame with honeycomb, and are made from the finest and freshest ingredients. Order yours in a crisp hand-rolled sugar cone or in a cup.

Old Town Italy (Umhlanga)

If you’ve already tried the glorious cronuts at this Italian market-style eatery, you’ll know that these guys don’t mess around when it comes to desserts. Visit the dreamy gelato stand inside to order a scoop or two with a homemade waffle cone as your vessel for pastel-coloured Italian gelato. We recommend the vanilla, cappuccino, Turkish delight, and chocolate and pistachio.

The variety of flavours on offer include Madagascan vanilla with salted-macadamia praline, mango sorbet, butter-salted caramel, milk tart, pineapple and ginger sorbet, and 70% Belgian chocolate.
