Like cheese and wine, good food and toe-tapping tunes make a perfect pairing. The Mother City may be fast paced, but there are still intimate bars and bistros that slow things down with smooth sounds. We tracked down five restaurants that offer both tasty food and live jazz in Cape Town.

Asoka (Gardens)

This Kloof Street hotspot has been a popular watering hole for music-loving locals for years. The eclectic décor and olive tree in the courtyard add whimsy to the ambience while chilled-out tunes fill the air. On Tuesdays, jazz fans can nab a table and tuck into tapas while local jazz musicians entertain. The music starts from 8pm with deep house starting from 10pm.

Barristers (Newlands)

This laid-back pub and restaurant offers live jazz on Sunday nights to beat the end-of-weekend blues. A duo from the city’s best musicians takes stage from 6pm to 9pm each week, while guests tuck into hearty fare of juicy steaks and grills as well as seafood and tasty bar snacks.

Harveys at The Winchester Mansions (Sea Point)

The music-filled jazz brunch in the tranquil garden of Winchester Mansions is extremely popular with locals and tourists. It runs from 11am to 2pm and includes a brunch feast and a glass of bubbly on arrival for R320 per person. Music lovers can read the complimentary Sunday paper and enjoy a bite while artists such as Austin Jacobs, Andrew Ford, Soi-Soi Gcqueze Band and Leonie le Roux fill the courtyard with their tunes.

Kloof Street House (Gardens)

This ornately decorated old house is a great spot to enjoy a lazy jazz-filled meal. On Sundays there’s a jazz lunch with soothing sounds to suit the mood. Find a seat in the picturesque garden with some bubbly and unwind while listening to the musicians play on the veranda or find a spot at the quirky bar inside and enjoy the hum of the band along with your favourite cocktail.

The Piano Bar (De Waterkant)

This social music lounge offers a soulful atmosphere with a bar-style menu. Soft jazz can be heard from the street, with exciting local musicians taking stage every evening. There is a flavoursome tapas offering as well as craft beers, exciting cocktails and great selection of boutique wines. Look out for the Sunday champagne brunch events where bubbly is only R35 a glass.
