Joburg

EAT Fine Dining (Northcliff)
Exquisite food. A hidden gem in Jo’burg that I wish I had been to before. Professional, fine dinning at its best. My first experience at EAT and I was nervous as I had booked it as surprise dinner for my boyfriend and I. I wasn’t disappointed. There was a four course set menu and à la carte. We each tried one. The food is delicious, creative and original. The chef, Philippe, had been hands-on in my booking and able to accommodate our dietary preferences. The staff on duty had no problems altering menu items for our dietary preferences as each item is made to order. I couldn’t believe they managed to put together items with all our exclusions, which few restaurants can do. The food is well priced for what you receive, unique and fresh. The menu changes almost daily according to availability which is lovely. I recommend Eat! – Linda Thompson

Escondido Tapas & Wine (Illovo)
WOW! I wish I had space for more… We started a “foodies” club about a year ago and we visit a different restaurant every month and I can easily say that this place took the crown for the year! Delicious food, well priced for what you get (worth every overspent cent), excellent wine list (albeit a tad overpriced compared to similar restaurants) and great service! Seared tuna was divine…and so were many of the other dishes. Definitely try the pumpkin fritters – to die for! Hope to visit again soon. – Jacquelise deVries

Flames Restaurant at the Four Seasons Hotel
Flames shares the great view of Joburg that The View has. We chose to dine here because the casual atmosphere was more appropriate for the kids than at The View. They even had a kids’ menu. Dinner was a feast. We had spicy Thai soup, seafood linguini, Norwegian salmon and oysters. The hot weather demanded that we have sorbet and ice cream for dessert even though there were many other delectable options. Fortunately we were staying the night so we could linger longer. – Sara Essop

La Cucina di Ciro (Parktown North)
We had a lovely dinner at La Cucina Di Ciro. We had not been in years, and decided to take our American friend there last night. We were happy that the restaurant was still up to our expectations. The quality of the food was great, the owner was still very friendly and the service was on point. It is also such a lovely venue. We will be back, again and again and again. – Diane Lecluse

Pretoria

De Kloof Restaurant (Waterkloof)
We thoroughly enjoyed the Valentine’s set menu, the five-course meal with paired wines. All the flavours were wonderful and the wines perfectly selected. The portion sizes were also just right. Definitely one of the best restaurants in Pretoria. – Alinke Fick

Doppio Zero (Irene)
Doppio Zero Irene is one of my favourite everyday restaurants. Whether I am in the mood for breakfast, lunch, dinner or just a treat from their bakery, I always leave Doppio Zero a happy customer. Doppio Zero Irene makes delicious coffee drinks and their menu is interesting and appetising. The pizza and pasta needs special mention and of course their gorgeous ice cream by the scoop. Their staff offer great service and the atmosphere is bubbly and relaxing at the same time. I will be supporting Doppio Zero Irene for many more years. – Zanda Norval

Toni’s Fully Furnished Pizza Company (Rietondale)
Best pizza you’ll find in Pretoria! Pesto Pizza is my absolute favourite and you can’t leave without sharing a dessert pizza. Service is great and so is the wine list. One of my all-round favourites in Pretoria. – Jacquelise deVries

KwaZulu-Natal Midlands

Blueberry Café (Nottingham Road)
This was a brilliant find. The decor is tasteful and on trend. The manager went out of his way to make things comfortable for us, even though we arrived late for our booking. And the food was both beautiful and delicious. Fresh, simple, creative. And at great prices considering some of the other overpriced but average restaurants in the area. They also roast their own coffee and pour a perfect cappuccino. Wish I could go back right now. – Mia Roets

Cape Town

Active Sushi (Hudson’s Street)
Omg I absolutely love this place and have become addicted… As a sushi lover, the freshness and deliciousness of this restaurants sushi is top quality for really reasonable price. As a fan of many expensive sushi restaurants, this one comes out tops. The friendliness of the staff make you feel like family and really look after you. Never mind it being my favourite sushi restaurant; it’s one of my favourite restaurants fullstop. And to add a plus, the vibe in the restaurant is fantastically awesome! – Maxine Lurie

Anatoli Turkish Restaurant (Green Point)
Absolutely delicious! Don’t skimp on the meze – it’s amazingly delicious! Mains were great: I highly recommend the lamb kebab over the lamb shank – better spices and flavour overall. The décor is beautiful and the waiters are great. An absolute must! – Penny Cairns

The Greek Fisherman (V&A Waterfront)
What a find! This beautiful restaurant has incredible food to match. I had the slow cooked lamb with tzatziki, which was honestly one of the most delicious meals I’ve ever had. It literally fell off the bone. The staff are on the ball, the view is gorgeous and the food to die for. Definitely worth a visit! – Penny Cairns

Inside & You’re Out Burgers (City Bowl)
The stairs leading up to the restaurant paves the way to the blank canvas of this eatery – a simple interior with pale-coloured walls and vibrant greens (literally) growing from the tables and along the ceiling, but with a menu exploding with flavour. Never before has a veggie burger left me as satisfied as their gourmet mushroom burger with confit peppers, goat’s cheese feta and basil mayonnaise. Not to mention the sinfully indulgent chocolate milkshake for dessert. It was chocolatey goodness with the perfect balance of bitter and sweet to end the gastronomic delight. It is clear that the owners of this restaurant know what they want and know how to do it well!! – Jana du Plessis

Winelands

Blacksmith’s Kitchen (Northern Paarl)
This is by far one of the Top 3 restaurants in Paarl. Definitely the best steak in Paarl. I’ve been to the Blacksmith’s Kitchen twice now. They are situated high up between the vineyards and the view from there, looking down on the lights in the evening, is spectacular. On my first visit I had the pork belly and on my second visit I had the fillet steak. Both were delicious and the steak was the best I had in years. Melt in the mouth. We also don’t leave without dessert; all their desserts or tarts are always 10 out of 10! Yummm. – Anita Gerber

Absolutely beautiful. Gorgeous spot in the gardens. Such a magical wine farm. Unwind your soul with a glass of their delectable wines or a cappuccino. We had a sandwich – very tasty. Homemade chutneys are delicious. Service was good. Will definitely visit again! – Jacquelise deVries
