If clicks are an indication of popularity, then these would be the country’s favourite restaurants. From fine dining restaurants to neighbourhood gems, brand new spots that are buzzing to old favourites, here are the most viewed restaurants on our site in March. Did you love or loathe them? 1. Five Hundred (Sandhurst)
David Higgs’s fine dining restaurant has panache, a focus on flavour and the number two spot in our Top 10 list for South African restaurants.
2. DW Eleven-13 (Dunkeld West)
Serving up genuinely delicious fine dining food in Dunkeld West, Marthinus Ferreira’s restaurant is another card-carrying member of the 2014 Top 10. (They’re number eight this year.)
3. Hudson’s (Parkhurst)
Burgers are not showing any signs of falling in popularity, and the expansion of the Cape Town-born chain into Joburg understandably had tongues wagging.
4. The Wolfpack (Sandton)
This is the second branch of the burger joint that started in Parkhurst. Burgers and craft beer are the predictably popular focus.
5. Restaurant Parreirinha (Rossettenville)
You’ll need to book well in advance to secure a table at this classic Portuguese restaurant. Think prawn cakes, amazing caldo verde and bacalhau à bráz (salted cod fish).
6. Cafe del Sol (Randburg)
This restaurant took home the title of Best Italian Restaurant at the 2012 Eat Out Awards. Tuck into homemade ravioli and gnocchi, stuffed calamari and rolled pork fillet oozing fontina, mozzarella and ham.
7. The Grand (Rivonia)
This is technically a strip club, but we presume you just wanted to know more about the supposedly legendary buffet. Right?
8. Cafe del Sol Botanico (Bryanston)
The new sibling of Café del Sol (see no. 6), this nature-inspired restaurant also includes The Landmark Bar, and aperitivo bar.
9. The San Deck (Sandton)
With beautiful views over Sandton and an outdoor terrace with fire pits and couches, this is a great spot for an after-work sundowner.
10. Lobster Trap (Bryanston)
This unassuming spot serves seafood (a recent special involved seared scallops with spring onion, chilli and lemon juice), sushi and meatier dishes like beef Wellington.
1. Life Grand Cafe (Hazelwood)
Beautifully decorated and vibey, this is a great spot for tapas.
2. La Terrasse Rooftop Café (Menlo Park)
Tagines are the stars of the show at this Moroccan restaurant. The rooftop location doesn’t hurt either.
3. Burger Bistro (Villiera)
With its innovative burgers, excellent fries and creative milkshakes, Burger Bistro knows was Tshwane residents crave.
4. Afro-boer (The Willows)
Homey breakfasts and comforting lunches, served up with moerkoffie or a retro Coke float: this is a trendy, tasty tribute to South African food.
5. Hinterland Vleishandelaar (Hazelwood)
This boutique wine bar and meat merchant is earning glowing reviews from readers for its steaks.
6. Tacokombi
This is technically a food truck, not a restaurant, but one thing’s for sure: their Mexican food, inspired by the couple’s time in California, sure is popular.
7. Harissa Bistro (Hazelwood)
An innovative menu offers diners dishes like chilli-salt squid with cardamom mayo; chickpea fritters with harissa; or a roasted eggplant and tahini salad with apple atchar.
8. Brasserie de Paris (Waterkloof Ridge)
Order off the menu or try chef Ané Wait’s tasting menu at this architecturally eccentric restaurant. (The architect was a protégé of Le Corbusier).
9. Kream (Brooklyn)
Sophisticated, sleek and sexy, this is the spot for a business lunch or upscale birthday celebration.
10. Salt Eatery (Hazelwood)
Wessel van Jaarsveld’s charcuterie, tapas and sliders coupled with the relaxed, semi-industrial space make this a popular destination for after-work drinks.
Set in a huge house, Jaipur Palace has a longstanding reputation for curries.
2. Madame Zingara (Marine Parade)
Only in Durbs until the 20th June, The Theatre of Dreams is part restaurant, part circus.
3. Neo Cafe (Durban North)
Serving up Portuguese food, Neo Café garners good reviews for great prawns and peri-peri chicken.
4. Capsicum Restaurant (Durban Central)
Situated at the Britannia Hotel, Capsicum has a reputation for authentic curries – if you’re feeling brave, try the delicious tripe, fish roe or trotter curry.
5. Quo (Gillitts)
Serving up modern, fusion cuisine with an Asian twist, Quo is a great option for a casual first date or a gathering with friends.
6. Cafe Bloom (Midlands)

The new little sister to 9th Avenue Bistro, this breakfast and lunch spot is getting good marks for their freshly prepared food.

Tucked away in an unassuming shopping centre, this restaurant nevertheless serves up excellent Szechuan cuisine.
1. Marc’s Table (Green Point)
The new restaurant at The Sugar Hotel has been receiving a lot of buzz of late. A great location and deck overlooking Somerset Road doesn’t hurt.
2. The Company’s Garden Restaurant (City Bowl)
Exceptionally child-friendly, this restaurant fills up fast on weekends, so it’s best to book if you’re dreaming of alfresco brunch.
3. The Grand Cafe and Beach (Granger Bay)
With it’s own white sand beach, this is the ultimate place for cocktails. A popular option for tourists and the well-heeled.
4. The Pot Luck Club (Woodstock)
A nominee for last year’s awards, The Pot Luck Club offers stellar tapas in a showstopping location, the top of the grain towers at the Old Biscuit Mill.
5. La Colombe (Silvermist)
The recently relocated restaurant has an impressive reservations book, so make sure you plan ahead if you’re keen to visit their exquisite and more relaxed new space.
6. Il Leone (Green Point)
An Italian classic. Try the gnocchi.
7. Don Armando (Green Point)
Run by the same owner as Il Leone, this new Argentinian restaurant serves delicious steak.
8. El Camino Global Eatery (City Bowl)
A great space for workday lunch, El Camino offers wraps, fresh juices and Tribe coffee.
9. Carne on Kloof (Higgovale)
Giorgio Nava’s second city bowl steakhouse is possibly even more popular than the original. Simply incredible steak.

Affordable and owner-run, this is a popular spot in this neck of the woods.

George Jardine’s beautiful restaurant is a stalwart of the Top 10 list, coming in at number five for 2014. It’s great value for some of the best fine dining food in the country.
2. The Thirsty Scarecrow (Stellenbosch)
A lovely casual spot for craft beer, pizza and tapas, the Thirsty Scarecrow has grown popular with those who are after the more relaxed side of the Winelands.
3. Overture (Stellenbosch)
Bertus Basson’s fine dining restaurant is another regular of our Top 10 (they’re number six this time around). Gorgeous views from the Hidden Valley farm add to the experience.
4. The Tasting Room (Franschhoek)
A magical place to experience South African ingredients in a surprise tasting menu. Number three in our 2014 Top 10.
5. Rust en Vrede (Stellenbosch)
A traditional fine dining experience with silver service and Top 10 status. (They’re number seven for 2014.)

The beautiful Hemel en Aarde Valley is a stunning backdrop for Eric Bulpitt’s beautiful food. Number nine in the current Top 10.

Michael Broughton makes some thoroughly delicious food in this relaxed setting. Terroir is number 10 in the current Top 10.
8. Makaron (Stellenbosch)
A worthy nominee for the 2014 Top 10, Makaron is known for its innovative fine-dining fare and beautifully designed interiors at small boutique hotel, Majeka House. (Try their decadent Sunday brunch.)
9. Bread & Wine (Franschhoek)
Humble bistro food with real flavour and award-winning charcuterie by Neil Jewell. Another nominee for last year’s awards.
