A 19th century stacked-limestone manor house outside the sleepy village of Stanford in the Overberg, has been lovingly restored to house a 30-seater fine-dining restaurant, aptly named 1892 Stanford Spookhuis.
Open daily for picnic lunches and dinner, the restaurant offers a contemporary take on classic South African cuisine.
My approach to food is, simply put, local is lekker, says executive chef Craig Andersonn – a born and bred Capetonian.
Diners can expect to feast on the likes of ostrich neck waterblommetjie bredie, homemade chicken liver pâté infused with Jack Daniels, served with a Cumberland sauce and Melba toast, or braised lamb shank with herbed mash potato and a red wine and port gravy.
An impressive lineup of local wines from estates such as Raka, Hamilton Russell, Bouchard Finlayson, Springfontein and Lomond, complement the South African fare on offer.
