For first timers to Ethiopian food, I recommend ordering the big platter with all the different dishes - it was about R360, which easily feeds four - if not 5. While I prefer the food at Addis in the Cape, Madam Taitou is much cheaper and there is very little difference. Recommended for a group who are on a budget and want to try something outside of their comfort zone.
We ventured out to Madame Taitou to quench the Ethiopian food craving last evening. As a Cape Town local there may be a tendency to avoid Long Street on a Saturday eve- especially as tourist season starts kicking into high gear. We were pleasantly surprised- the ambience is quiet- tasteful music plays in the background and you find yourself surrounded by a virtual jungle of potted plants, Africana replica masks, figurines, antiques (all for sale by the way). Service was a bit slow- but very friendly. Their liquor license is under review- so we settled for the only thing they could offer other than coffee or cool drink; fresh squeezed Apple juice for our son and two glasses of Tej(ia)- Ethiopian honey brewed wine- absolutely delicious and highly alcoholic. The food is presented with a minimalist flair and did not disappoint. Their injera is made with rice flour as Tef is hard to come by- the texture is similair but not the same. I opted for the vegetarian platter- absolutely delicious- and lighter than Addis in Cape or Little Ethiopia- both around the corner. My partner went for tibs and we all really enjoyed the meal. Owner operated- support this joint! We will be back!
