Im sorry, but I went to Sawaddee last night for the first time and thought it was terrible. My wife and I live in the area and checked it out on EatOut before deciding. After the rave review your critic gave the restaurant even boldly naming it "perhaps the best Thai in Cape Town" we thought well, we cant go wrong. Firstly the place could do with a bit of an upgrade, it feels old and somewhat dingy. However, I could overlook this if the food was good. I would go as far as saying it is the worst Thai experience I have had in Cape Town. The Wang Thai and even Simply Asia is way way nicer. I am never one to complain and run down a restaurant ever bu they need to know. Our starter, I ordered the prawn toast and the sesame chicken wings. The chicken wings were raw, pink inside (they looked good when they arrived though). The prawn toast looked as if it was a piece of toasted sandwich that had been left in the sun for 2 days. It was oily, soggy, and gross. We then ordered the sizzling Mongolian beef fillet and the chilli lemon chicken dish. Both would have been nice were it not for the thick syrupy/caramel/sweet tasting sauces they were served in. The sauce on the beef tasted like it should be on a malva pudding. In fact every sauce, be it the dipping sauces for the wings/prawn toast, the sauce that the mains were served in and even the little sauces that you get with the prawn crackers in the beginning were all just plain gross. We got our bill and were in and out within an hour. The first and last time I will go there, I think EatOut should send someone to check it out because I think the standards must have dropped big time, perhaps Im wrong and was a bad day, go have a look and let me know.

Given my love for Thai food, Sawadee was an utter delight to find. The restaurant has various rooms each with a different look and feel to it. Essentially you could dine in the room of your choice to go with your mood. We selected the room where you sit on cushions on the floor. Admittedly this may sound uncomfortable to spend a couple of hours without a backrest. However, there are quite a few tables where you can lean against the wall & I found thus to be very comfy indeed.

Entering the restaurant we were warmly welcomed & given the chance to look around to select where we wanted to sit. The floor seating room did require us to take your shoes off which came as a surprise. Luckily I was in flip flops - do no big deal. I imagine this May concern some people, so if you plan going to Sawadee, plan to be able to remove your shoes without it bothering you.

Both the food & service was great. Attentive staff & delicious food. We had dim sum (pork & chicken) to start, which was so lovely we ordered a second serving. The Dom sum was a generous portion compared to other restaurants I'be been to, i.e., 5 pieces. For mains we ordered Prawn Red & Penang curry, which were both delightful. The portions were perfectly sized to be full but not overly so.

This restaurant gets full a green light from me. I can't wait to go back to try other dishes on the menu. The pricing is also really good.

The food is good, but the service is dreadful. The food came 45 minutes late because the waiter who took our order forgot about our table. The customers who had arrived after us had already received their food and had finished eating. This may have been understandable as the restaurant was busy. However, the worst part of the experience was that the waiter who admitted he had forgotten our order did not even apologise and had an attitude problem. For example, Whilst telling him we are not satisfied with the long delay, he interrupting abruptly, and then said, "I was only asking about the food." He then rolled his eyes in front of us.He only apologised when we demanded an apology from him in front of the owner.

I didnt really know what to expect of Sawaddee but was pleasantly surprised. The service was a little slow, but friendly. The food was excellent. The chicken spring rolls were crisp and packed with chicken. The prawns tempura were fresh with a divine sauce. The main course honey-duck was delicious (the steamed rice was a bit clumped). The sweet and sour prawns were good.
