Owner's description

Dear Park is known for its freshly prepared foods. All meats and eggs have been personally sourced from independent, free- range suppliers, and seasonal organic fruit and vegetables inform the daily specials menu. The baker produces a variety of cakes including an award winning chocolate cake, dense and wholesome carrot-pecan nut, pear and almond cakes and a zesty lemon meringue pie. Freshly squeezed juices are made on demand. The wine list has a balanced selection: good value wines and more serious award winners. The Café is situated on the upper slopes of Vredehoek overlooking Table Bay, and is just below the Deer Park, which is a popular gateway into the Table Mountain Reserve. Light, airy interior, with simple, Scandinavian contemporary design and winter fireplace. North facing windows and doors open onto a green public park with towering Stone Pines and play facilities. Bustling on week-ends with families and children enjoying the park, but more relaxed in the week with plenty of work meetings through the morning and business lunches. Evening service is more formal attracting locals and families. The flexible, open interior-exterior space makes it popular as a function venue of many kinds.

This is surely one of the City Bowl's hidden gems, I was at Deer Park Cafe today observing the parents, kids and dogs enjoying themselves. I think it must be rare to be able to sit and enjoy a good coffee, good food (that you didn't have to cook yourself) and adult chatter, whilst still being able to keep an eye on the kids enjoying outside space and fresh air. As someone without kids I still found a quiet spot where I could sit and do some work. The menu had a wide variety of items with daily specials and I was very pleased to find they cater well for vegetarians and other special food requirements (I have a few!). The Falafel Salad was fresh and just fantastic. Dare I say I finished off with a huge slice of freshly made Brandy Chocolate Cake. I had to wave to get attention once or twice but the waiters were very friendly and I enjoyed that I could sit for as long as I liked without being hassled to move on or to order something else. It's great to have been able to just "be" for a bit and escape from the fast pace of life. I was impressed enough to share my experience and will visit again soon! Thank you
I ordered the butternut gnocchi with lamb which was a Mains dish on the specials board. The portion was stingy (was Scrooge in charge?) - closer to that of a starter, and way overpriced (R145) for a meal that I didn’t much enjoy. There were about 10 gnocchi in the bowl, and they weren’t huge. The pulled lamb was dry and there were only a few pieces scattered over the gnocchi. The only redeeming factor in the bowl was the tomato sauce, which was flavorful and had good colour. My husband and son both ordered the ham calzones. Mediocre to say the least, but you’d be doing cartwheels if you love onions, as the calzones were generously filled with large slices of onion. The name of this dish should be changed to Onion & Ham calzone. Despite the wonderful garden and general ambience, I won’t be returning, as I’m still pained by the small serving that I got, and wounded by the cost of it. It’s safe to say, cost would not have been a factor if I saw value, and if I had really enjoyed the meal. Btw, I never got the chance to say anything about my meal, as no-one asked.
Always friendly faces and positive attitudes. The staff make the place so comfortable to relax and work in. Great wifi and amazing food. They give a touch of personalism which makes the difference. Devin
First time at this restaurant and it was amazing. It has spectacular food - perhaps the best in CapeTown. I would highly recommend it to all my friends and family and I just cannot wait to go back, for another Sunday lunch!
I took my girlfriend here after being recommended by friends. I wish I had found this place earlier!!! Awesome, relaxed ambience and even better food! The pork vindaloo was probably the best curry I ever had and my girlfriend's butter chicken was equally impressive. The chilli popper starters we had were brilliant as well and I honestly think I could eat 20 in one sitting as they taste so good. The service was quick and friendly too, this is possibly the most underrated restaurant in Cape Town. We will be back :)
