Yes, it’s spelt ‘Presinct‘: this new Maboneng spot is no ordinary precinct. When trendy couple Thands Ncube and Mpumelelo Nyathi found themselves with a former recycling plant in Maboneng, they let their imaginations run wild.
They snapped up the talents of Gugu Minnaar (the former head chef of Kafria in Ferndale), with her knowledge of traditional food, on-premises baking and slow food, and accompanied it with a host of activities. The Presinct has already opened unofficially and is using the opportunity to test out its concept.
Over the weekends there is salsa dancing, film evenings and a car wash. From the outdoor tables you can watch your motorbaby being cosseted before your eyes. Vintage cars are brought here for special treatment, as well as motorbikes and the new urban bicycles so popular in Maboneng.
On the food side, there is an indoor and outdoor grill, plus cakes, croissants, ciabatta and steamed breads. Also on offer are all-day breakfasts of magwinya (vetkoek) and spicy mince, spiced chicken livers on toasted homemade ciabatta, and full English breakfasts. Gugu also prepares stews and potjies, including an ostrich neck slow cooked in red wine and thyme, and her rich mogodu dish. The menu features her craft burgers, too, with all elements handmade on the premises. There are also beef ribs and chicken wings, with all the homemade trimmings.
As for drinks, there’s a full bar specialising in craft beers and crafted jam-jar cocktails. Order yours with some of the bar snacks – think mini chicken wraps or the crispy masonja (mopani worms) with a sweet-and-sour dip.
The official launch takes place on Wednesday evening with a performance by renowned local group, The Muffinz. Expect many equally great musicians and bands in the future and plenty more delicious meals.
