The leafy suburb of Newlands will get a trendy new restaurant and takeaway spot next week. Taking over the old Wakaberry spot on Dean Street, Banks Burger is a fast-food concept serving old-school burgers made from scratch.
The family-run business aims to take the junk out of junk food and replace it with the basics: Burgers that are full of flavour and none of the nasties, like preservatives and additives. The hip orange-and-aqua-green shop will offer visitors quick-fix takeaway food that’s made with love.
The menu will be to the point, featuring burgers, fries and milkshakes. There will, however, be a vegan patty that’s free of gluten and soy. Everything will be made from scratch, including the brioche buns and pickles.
Customers can choose from three different burger sizes: Single, double, and triple for the extra-hungry. House-ground beef patties will be propped up on homemade buns with all the trimmings, including homemade ketchup and a Banks Burger secret sauce. Avoiding gluten? They’ll have you covered with a bunless option. There’ll be combos, classic fries and sweet potato chips, soft drinks and shakes, and a delivery system to make the fast food even quicker is on the cards.
Opening day is not yet set, but the Banks Burger team has hinted that it might be within the next week. Keep your eyes on their Instagram and Facebook pages for opening announcements.
Why do you call your chips “fries”? I can not understand it, you are not in America, and I assume your market is south african. So why American labels – they are chips for gods sake, not fries.
Hi, sounds awesome, are they halal? thanks
Very good.

Feeling somewhat peckish after my show on Saturday and after dropping off my domestic executive at my Moms place in Pinelands I decided to try the new Banks Burger joint in Dean Street Newlands, which is just around the corner from my possie.
Here’s what the Klutz in the Kitchen found as he sat down the day after the tasting whilst listening to the wonderful new Sara Gazarek and Josh Nelson duo album Dream in the Blue.
The joint looks really pristine clean and new, it also had that “new car smell”, you know what I mean, ok then it was the smell of freshly painted walls.
Had a bit of a chat with the owner who assured me that their chips were hand cut and the their burgers were fresh made from scratch, all of their sauces and other magufftas are also homemade which is served on their very small limited menu. The owner also told me that their burgers were made to their “secret” recipe and the patties weighed 90grams each, which b.t.w. is the uncooked weight. The Brioche buns are also scratch made too I was assured. The trimmings were the usual cast of goodies, tomato, lettuce, onion, (choice of raw or caramelized) and pickle
The Klutz in the Kitchen decided on take away instead of sit down and ordered a double cheese burger plus a large chips which came to a total of R78 bucks.
The skinny is that the burger had 2 patties, yellow cheese and all the regular burger trimmings and came wrapped in paper with the chips in a small paper bag all of which was popped into a brown paper bag. Big brownie points for that, hate plastic bags.
On the drive home I stuck my grubby paws into the BPB (Brown Paper Bag) to munch some chips whilst at the robots, popped a few into my mouth, oh boy, problem immediately, they were hot (a good thing) and but sadly extremely fully of grease and very unpleasant. At the next stop light I had a look at the packet in the bag, they were all quite oil soaked and a horrible slap dark to burnt brown, did I mention the grease, oh yeah done it. Oh, if that was their large chips I’d really hate to see the size of their regular, must be very small indeed. Nuff said of the sad saga of the chips, now onto the burger.
Oh boy where to start, ok opened the messy wrapped beast and took small bite and stuff just oozed out, patties one side trimmings all over the place, well inside the wrapped burger that is, the sauce acted as an ice rink see,
Nothing special about the burger, the sauce supplied was not very tasty at all and did nothing for the burger. The “pickles” were thin sliced cucumber and were quite flavourless, the caramelized onions were also tasteless, the tomato and chopped lettuce were, well thin sliced tomato and chopped lettuce again flavourless. The “brioche” bun acted as a sponge soaking up the sauce and wet lettuce and tomato, further the inside of the bun was not toasted which contributed to soggy wet bread.
The patties were not juicy at all they were actually quite tough and equally flavourless. In fact no better than any of the large well-known fast food joints that we have all become accustomed to.
I was really hoping that Banks Burger would live up to the good story written in Eat Out, but sadly not so. Don’t know when I’ll revisit, but revisit I will, sometime in the distant future.
Oh do go have a listen to Sara Gazarek and pianist Josh Nelson’s really fabulous duo album.
I had read the story on the Eat Out Page here’s the article https://www.eatout.co.za/article/new-burger-joint-open-newlands-cape-town/
