The stalwart on Kloof Street’s restaurant scene is named after the local legend of Van Hunks, who got into a smoking contest with the devil and lost – thus causing the misty “smoke” around the mountains. It’s charming and relaxed, with two fireplaces and a deck for warmer days. The menu is a South African celebration – with everything from peri-peri chicken livers and rump steak to Cape Malay bobotie and springbok shank.
It was an ok place to go to, food is good, fireplace is warm, service is slow and the portion sizes are terrible. The owner did come and explain after we complained and did try and sort it out, but I can't say I will go back. There are too many eateries in Cape Town to be bothered with one that has bad portions and useless waiters.
