Owner's description

This much-loved neighbourhood café offers guests a relaxing beach-house feel and sweeping views from the stadium to the harbour and beyond. Bright and sunny by day and warm and intimate by night, The Sidewalk Café has a wonderfully diverse clientele and many loyal regulars. Perfect for lazy breakfasts, leisurely lunches, sundowners or romantic dinners, this charming venue is disarmingly casual with just a dollop of sophistication.

On Thursday night we decided to pop in for a drink and dinner after not being to Sidewalk Cafe for some time. The last time we went there albeit a few years ago it was always warm and cosy with some nice simple food on the menu. First up was the wine list, I suspect no one has ever tried their selections of Red's they were all at best entry level wine's. With one of them so bad we couldn't even drink it. That was just the beginning , the worst was yet to come. I then ordered the caesar salad it had absolutely no flavour at all, one hardish egg, hardly any cheese, a few pieces of flavourless chicken. So not great but not nearly as bad as my poor husbands dish. He ordered the ostrich steak "special" there was nothing "special" about it A thin piece of steak arrived it was grey, under cooked to the point that it was cold in the middle and basically a little blue. Then to accompany it was literally half a butternut stuffed with boiled rice. The butternut was hard and there was literally no flavour. It took me back to being in hostel in fact even that food was better. I doubt they have employed a chef but rather pulled in an untrained cook to keep the kitchen a float. The bathrooms are dirty and smelly, heaven knows the kitchen must look like. It was by far the worst meal I have ever eaten. I did write them a mail but hey never bothered to respond.
They are def NOT vegetarian - did not have any options for me - offered me CALAMARI!!!!. I ordered a drink - the bottle was DISGUSTINGLY dirty. I asked for water for my dogs - it look as if someone had vomited int he bowl before the waterbowl was brought. Def NOT for the fainthearted. The chef walked past me - he was SOOOOO dirty - I scrambled away as fast as I could.
Always fantastic food and wonderful ambience. My only gripe is the menu says the line fish is SASSI certified, pretty vague as to the meaning, especially since they serve certified orange-listed kingklip.

I would like to say thank you to our waiter and the manageress for acting so quickly and professionally after an accident that happened. It could have spoilt my birthday but instead made me greatful and in awe of this wonderful little restaurant. Well done guys, you are the best.

Cool vegetarian options - the quinoa and lentil salad was a winner.
