Food:

If you want a proudly South African moment, visit Goederust because it celebrates patriotism from the brown paper menus to the old agricultural implements and oil lanterns hanging from the rietdak ceiling. Tomato bredie is a must, along with a melktert portion that wobbles slightly once set down and has just the right amount of almond essence in its white creaminess. There's usually a venison option such as the gemsbok sirloin for heartier appetites and the quiche is always freshly baked and accompanied by a crisp garden salad.

Wine:

Not overly complex but caters to all tastes with an emphasis on Franschhoek producers.

Service:

Local and extremely knowledgeable on all the menu items.

Ambience:

Relaxed and gesellig, be it on the stoep under the rietdak or inside. There's no rush – relax and take your time. The gardens also invite a little wander around.

And...:

Farm stall next door for home-bakes, koeksisters, rooibos and more. Get there early if you want some fresh bread! (FM, September 2010)
