Reuben Riffel just can’t sit still. The celebrity chef and restaurateur is opening another restaurant in Franschhoek at the end of this week.
Named Racine, which is French for ‘back to your roots’, the restaurant will serve up bistro / brasserie-style food in a very relaxed and interactive way. The eatery is aptly named to reflect that Reuben started his career right there on the Chamonix Wine Farm.
We’re sure the neighbourhood restaurant will bring the same honest, delicious food that has made his other restaurants – Reuben’s at One&Only Cape Town, Reuben’s at The Robertson Small Hotel and Reuben’s Restaurant and Bar – much-loved in South Africa.
Eat Out will investigate and report back soon.

It is not often that I take to social media to publicise bad dining experiences, but after a really poor food experience I felt compelled to do so. Our waiter Melussi was amazing and certainly deserves heaps of praise from the management. The same cannot be said of the chef. We had no option to return everything excepting the mussels (which were delicious) , duck salad and squid. All of our meat dishes were over cooked and below standard. Even the simple Greek salad was smothered with a honey mustard salad dressing and when returned came back floating in balsamic vinegar!
We have great respect for Reuben and have had some memorable meals at his Restuarant Reubens, but unless his presence is felt in the kitchen of some of his newer establishments his reputation will be destroyed.
Unbelievable Sunday lunch, so much so that we are going back for more 3 days later! Can’t wait…!
