The scintillating Eat Out Restaurant Awards ceremony was held at the Westin Grand in Cape Town on Sunday, 28 November. ABIGAIL DONNELLY is the editor of Eat Out and food editor of Woolworths TASTE. Her accolades include winning the Galliova Award for best food writer four times. Her free time is spent with husband Terry (who cooks every night) and their two boys Jack and Matthew.
PETER GOFFE-WOOD has been a chef for over 20 years, has worked for several award-winning restaurants, and opened La Couronne Hotel and Winery in Franschhoek. He is currently the chef patron of Wild Woods in Hout Bay, owns PGW Eat (a food consultancy), and runs the Kitchen Cowboy cooking workshops. He is also the author of two books and the chef ambassador of the Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiative (SASSI). This is Pete’s fifth year as an Eat Out judge.
ARNOLD TANZER is the owner of food consultancy Food on the Move, vice president of the SA Chefs Association (SACA), continental director for the World Association of Chefs Societies as well as Sunday Times chef of the year 2008-2009. This is Arnold’s fifth year as an Eat Outjudge.
ANNA TRAPIDO has worked as a medical anthropologist, qualified as a chef at Prue Leith College of Food and Wine, edited a restaurant guide, and written a number of books, the most notable being the Nelson Mandela food biography, Hunger for Freedom: The Story of Food in the Life of Nelson Mandela. This is her first year as an Eat Out judge.
Aletta is a freelance food writer for various magazines and websites. She blogs passionately on www.forage.co.za when she’s not busy cooking.
Alexis Kriel (AIK)
Alexis is a foodie known for her Indian cooking classes. When she’s not instructing and enlightening the public in the kitchen, she writes about food, trains chefs and consults to the hospitality industry
Andrea Burgener (AB)
Andrea has moved between the restaurant industry and food writing for
the last 15 years. Apart from making and eating delicious stuff, what drives her is food’s connection to broader issues – from the bizarre ways technology is changing our diet to how our childhood eating patterns affect our lives.
Andy Fenner (AF)
Andy is a professional food whore. He has written for WINE magazine, Food&Home, Men’s Health, Women’s Health, Edgars Club Magazine and the Eat Out online team, and now Mail&Guardian have named himone of 200 Young South Africans you should take to lunch. He told us he’s expecting your call.
Annette Klinger (AK)
Annette is a full-time writer for Eat Out, Eat In and Time Out. As much as
she loves the sights and sounds of Cape Town’s City Bowl, her real poison is taking to the highways in search of off-the radar dorpies to sample their culinary offerings.
Bazil Stander (BS)
When this product innovation chef is not cooking up a storm at the Woolworths development kitchen in Cape Town, he can be found enjoying good food and drinking fine wines almost anywhere in the country.
Bev Tucker (BT)
Bev has travelled extensively in Africa and abroad, where she worked in the luxury hospitality industry. This experience informs her understanding and appreciation of the best in global food and travel. She writes extensively for the South African lifestyle media.
Charl Leslie (CL)
Predominantly a food-loving radio presenter, Charl hosts the weekday lunch and Sunday morning oldies programmes on Algoa FM, with the popular feature Charl Cooks now in its eighth year, and equivalent Afrikaans cookery column, Charl Kook, in Die Burger.
Charlotte Pregnolato (CP)
Charlotte’s passions revolve around food: exploring farmers’ markets, cooking, teaching and, best of all, eating. She has been writing food and lifestyle articles for seven years. Her latest venture is the cookbook A Fresh Approach to South African Cooking, which aims to raise awareness of and funds for youth from Knysna’s Sinethemba Centre also writes about food and wine for various publications.
Ciska Kay (CK)
Ciska is a lifestyle journalist who may love good food a bit more than she should. She spends a fair amount of her time staking out restaurants and trying new eateries in the Lowveld.
Coenie Visser (CV)
Freelance publicity consultant and former owner of the popular Oak & Vigne Café in Greyton, Coenie spends a few days a week in Cape Town, doing ‘research’ in hip coffee shops; the rest of the week he is in Greyton tending to the alpacas, donkeys and Italian spinone on his farm.
Colette du Plessis (CdP)
Freelance writer Colette lives on a farm in the Free State where she loves cooking and tending to her organic veggie garden (with her two little helpers aged 2 and 4). She enjoys travelling to forgotten places and finding interesting places to eat.
Diane de Beer (DdeB)
Diane is an arts journalist and book editor at the Pretoria News. She has a weekly food and restaurant column and is delighted that food is being viewed from a different perspective by a slew of bright young chefs who have infused Pretoria’s cuisine culturewith vibrancy and vigour.
Emile Joubert (EJ)
Emile is a Capetonian who works as a marketing consultant to the wine industry, and also writes about food and wine for various publications.
Fiona McDonald (FM)
Fiona trained and worked as a hard news journalist before being seduced into wine writing ‘by accident’. As editor of WINE magazine for nearly eight years, Fiona ate and drank well, before opting for a freelance career in 2008. Courtesy of the Eat Out guide she’s still eating well. She’s also a recognised international wine judge.
Francois Ferreira (FF)
Francois is known for his contemporary and quirky approach to the country’s rich food culture. Whether it’s beetroot and biltong mielie risotto or innovative cheese sushi, Francois contributes to the appreciation of South African cuisine with near-evangelical enthusiasm.
Frank Chemaly (FC)
Frank shares his love of food and wine with the readers of the Sunday Tribune every week. He relishes good cooking and good company, and one of the highlights of his year was eating his way through East London for Eat Out.
Gerhard Uys (GU)
Gerhard is a freelance photographer and journalist who writes profiles and does portraiture for magazines. A self-confessed chocoholic, he believes that food is the essential ingredient to any lasting memory, even if it’s eating dry biscuits on a mountain with a friend.
Graham Howe (GH)
Graham is the wine and food editor of Habitat and contributes lifestyle features to many local publications. He is also a columnist for the Cape Times, Business Day, Wine Tourism News and wine.co.za. When he’s not in Cape Town, you’ll find him reporting from exotic gourmet destinations.
Greg Landman (GL)
Greg regularly contributes to Country Life and writes for Wine Tourism News and the annual Wine Tourism Handbook. His background in film distribution and marketing has seen him eating in film capitals from Cannes to California.
Hennie Fisher (HF)
Hennie has cooked professionally for years and the passion continues. He now teaches at the University of Pretoria, writes for Business Day and the Pretoria News, and embraces any opportunity to eat, drink and celebrate life with friends.
Janine Walker (JW)
Janine is a food journalist who has been writing about restaurants for over 25 years. She ascribes her love of good food to her mother and grandfather, who taught her to try everything at least once.
Josef Talotta (JT)
American-born Josef Talotta moved to SA in 1992. In his South African career he was conceptualiser and founding editor of two titles, Leisure Options and Sandtonmagazine. He was previously Johannesburg bureau chief for Conde Nast House & Garden and design editor of Sunday Times Lifestyle. Josef has written for most SA and many UK glossies. He now heads up retail development for South Point, sourcing juicy retail, dining and entertainment concepts in the redevelopment of Braamfontein.
Kim Hoepfl (KH)
Kim is a veteran food and wine writer who contributes to the likes of Dine, and is a one-time features editor of Food & Home Entertaining magazine. She’s currently the editor of the South African Chef’s Association’s Chef! magazine.
Kobus van der Merwe (KvdM)
Kobus was web editor of eatout.co.za before heading off to the West Coast to pursue his passion – cooking. He is now at the helm of the Oep vi Koep tea garden in Paternoster.
Lee Middleton (LM)
Lee is a regular contributor to Fodor’s Travel Guides and Africa Geographic. She has travelled extensively since the age of seven, which has made her a discerning eat-outer.
Malu Lambert (ML)
The web editor of www.eatout.co.za is one hungry journalist. Before sinking her teeth into Eat Out,she wrote lifestyle features for Good Taste. She’s always on the lookout for an exciting new dish, drink or ingredient. This adventurous eater will try anything at least once.
Marana Brand van Hulsteyn (MB)
Marana is a seasoned journalist who writes about anything from food and lifestyle to crime stories. She’s currently training members of small community-based organisations in basic life skills in Limpopo. On the food front, quality fresh ingredients and beautiful presentation make her tummy rumble.
Maryke & Clifford Roberts (M&CR )
For 15 years now, magazines and newspapers have been paying journalists Maryke and Clifford Roberts to eat out and write about it. They still can’t believe their luck.
Michelle Matthews (MM)
Michelle loves eating: from mushroom porridge in Seoul to milk straight from the coconut in Sao Paulo. She writes for Marie Claire, Elle Deco, Fairlady and Obrigado, and her book, The Whole Food Almanac (Sunbird), was published in 2008.
Peter Feldman (PF)
Peter is an entertainment journalist who’s been in the industry for more than 40 years. Currently working as a freelance writer and publicist, he says eating out is still, as always, a passion of unconfined proportions for him.
Rewald Drinkwater (RD)
Rewald is the owner of Water Food Consultancy, and he lives for food. He’s also a firm believer in simplicity in food, and he grows his own vegetables as well as pressing his own olive oil. Throw in a glass of wine and he’s a happy man.
Richard Holmes (RH)
Richard is a freelance journalist and seafood fanatic who’s eaten crustaceans from Patagonia to Portland. Since he eats far too much airline food, he was more than happy to tackle some restaurants on terra firma.
Shirley Jones (SJ)
Shirley has always loved dining out but only began writing about her love for food, theatre and art when she joined The Natal Witness four years ago. Now a freelance journalist, she continues to write for various print lifestyle publications, as well as entertainment website www.goingplaces.co.za.
Tracy Gielink (TG)
Tracy is a freelance journalist who writes about entertainment, restaurants and food. With a wine diploma under her belt, she believes being an educated drunk is far more civilised.
Vicki Sleet (VS)
Vicki is a lifestyle and food journalist. She relishes the opportunity to taste her way through Cape Town’s best restaurants, enjoying everything from five-course dégustation menus to unpretentious comfort food such as fish and chips.
